The Chewelah Cougar boys basketball team picked up their first victory of the year, toppling NE 2B league foe Colfax 77-48 on Friday evening at Pein-Lynch Gym. Lukas Kubik led the way with 25 points and another four Cougars scored in double digits to improve the team record to 1-1 on the year.

Colfax, playing without it's top two scorers, pulled ahead 16-15 just before the end of the first quarter but Gabe Colt pulled Chewelah back ahead with off the backboard three-pointer. Then the Cougars went on a 22-6 run in the second quarter for a 40-22 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Chewelah went on a 23-5 run to completely ice the game and hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the year, as they dropped to 2-1.

The Cougars' Zach Bowman finished with 12 points while Nick Franks and Colt added 11 points apiece. Kruz Katzer also notched 10 points for the Cougars.

Chewelah bounced back from a season-opening loss to state power St. George's, while Colfax was held to below 50 points after posting two 60+ point performances to begin the season.

Chewelah will now travel south to play Lind-Ritzville today at 6 p.m.
